Guangdong Medical University, which evolved from Zhanjiang Branch of Sun Yat-Sen Medical College (Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences), was established in 1958 and upgraded in 1964 as a five- year medical college named Zhanjiang Medical College. The college was officially renamed Guangdong Medical College in 1992and Guangdong Medical University in 2016.In 2005, it won the title of “Outstanding College” in undergraduate teaching evaluation by National Ministry of Education and was approved to offer Medical Doctor’s degree programs in 2013.In May, 2015, its clinical medical discipline was listed among the global top one percentinESI (Essential Science Indicators) ranking. By January, 2016, the university hasbeen amongthe global top one percent universities in ESI ranking. During the past five decades, more than 140,000 excellent medical professionals have been trained for the country and the locality.
The picturesque university covers a total area of 1900 mu,consisting of Zhanjiang campus and Dongguan campus. Zhanjiang campus is situated in the coastal city of Zhanjiang with its attractive subtropical landscape. Dongguan campus,built in 2002,is located in the beautiful Lake Songshan high-tech industry development zone in Dongguan City.
There is a staff of more than 1,900 in GDMU,including 1392 faculty, 28 doctoral supervisors, 485 master tutors as well as two double-employed academicians.The university is composed of Postgraduate School, School of Basic Medicine, theNO 1School of Clinical Medicine, theNo 2School of Clinical Medicine, theNo 3School of Clinical Medicine, School of Laboratory Medicine, School of NursingSciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, School of Humanity and Management, School of Information Engineering,School of Foreign Languages, School of Further Education, School of Marxismand Department of Physical Education, with more than 20, 000 full-time undergraduates and postgraduates in total.
The university offersrationaldivision of academic disciplines: one category I discipline in doctoral programs, one category I discipline in graduate programs, 26 graduate programs, three key provincial disciplines, one Pearl River Scholars position-planning discipline.It has 25 undergraduate programs including medical science, science, management, law, technology, literature and economy.
The university provides excellent resources in teaching and research: 9 external clinical medical schools, 30 affiliated and non-affiliated hospitals, 80 clinical teaching hospitals, nine provincial teaching centers, 2 research centers in Zhanjiang campus and Dongguan campus respectively, four key provincial laboratory and engineering technology research centers, and one doctoral research institution.

The universityhasadvanced libraries with a collection of 1,706,000 volumes of hard-copy books, 1,074,500 digital books, 1,751 periodicals and more than thirty information databases in Chinese and other foreign languages.
